Eric Lu, an American pianist who placed fourth at the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015 at the age of just 17, is a Chinese-American born in Massachusetts in 1997. He won the 2017 International German Piano Prize. He also won first prize at the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition! His thoughtful, composed, and profound performances have earned high praise, with critics noting that they “far exceed the level one would expect from a pianist who is still only 20 years old.” This recording features “Chopin: Piano Sonata No. 2” and “Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4.” Known as one of Dan Tai Son’s favorite students and having studied under the renowned teacher McDonald at the Curtis Institute of Music, Eric Lu has steadily demonstrated his talent, including placing in the 2015 International Chopin Competition. Having won first prize at this year’s Leeds International Piano Competition, he confidently showcases his extraordinary talent on this debut album. His interpretations of Chopin have already been highly acclaimed. Having loved the “Ballade No. 4” since childhood, he places this piece at the beginning of this album and performs it with great expressiveness and a touch rich in nuance. For the piano sonatas, he chose No. 2 rather than No. 3. In the Funeral March of the third movement, he moves forward deliberately with a deep, resonant tone. The final movement, which races by like a gust of wind, also leaves a strong impression. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, the centerpiece of the album, was also selected. Roux presents this piece—which possesses one of the most introspective atmospheres in Beethoven’s oeuvre—with great care.
