A collection of works for a new anthology of "music for wind instruments," defined by the French Larousse Dictionary as "the most innovative form of art among the moderns: especially those of the 20th century." What is noteworthy in these works is that they are innovative in different ways and in different fields. They are also progressive and adventurous. The four composers featured on this album (Milhaud, Jolivet, Magnard, and Nielsen) are legitimately associated with what is widely known as modernism, convinced that new ideas and new musical aesthetics are generally prevalent for the post-20th century era. The two works by Ersan and Eskesch ask us to reflect on what modernity means for us today. While it is easy to set modernism in opposition to traditionalism, we must also consider the distinction between the composer's personality and approach. Les Vents Francais, a super wind ensemble of elite musicians, has focused on works from the classical to the modern era, and these evolving works are featured in this concert. Pursuing a high level of musicianship as a contemporary music field, the wind ensemble has succeeded in bringing out the sound of a wind ensemble that has discovered the possibilities of diverse modernism, far beyond the imagination.
