Offenbach (1819-1880)
Description:
Edgar Moreau was born in Paris in 1994 and started playing the cello at the age of 4 and piano at 6. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris with Philippe Muller and at the Kronberg Academy in Germany with Frans Helmerson, and has won numerous awards, including second prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011 and first prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 2002. He has performed with many top conductors, orchestras, and chamber musicians, and has been invited to perform at music festivals around the world. He has already released three solo albums on the Erato label, all of which have been highly acclaimed and best sellers in Europe. This fourth solo album is an ambitious program of Offenbach and Goulda's Cello Concerto, 130 years blank in compositional years; Offenbach, who will celebrate his 200th birthday in 2019, is famous for his operettas and operas, including "Heaven and Hell" and "Tales of Hoffmann," but Offenbach learned to play the cello from childhood under the tutelage of his father and entered the Paris Conservatory. After graduating, Offenbach became a cellist in an orchestra, and in the salons of high society he was known as "the cellist of the cello. This cello concerto, composed before Offenbach's 30th birthday, is a lyrical, romantic, and elegant work with a fantasy quality, which is typical of his later operas and operettas. And Friedrich Gulda's Cello Concerto, written for Heinrich Schiff, is an instrumental work with solo cello, brass band, drum set and guitar. It is an unprecedented mix of contemporary, jazz, and even folk music. The conductor is the acclaimed cellist, pianist, jazz pianist, conductor, composer, and arranger Rafael Merlan, and the performance of the two cello concertos is a wonderful example of his work.
