Ravel and Stravinsky by Beatrice Lana's incredible technique and musical intelligenceParis, France, at the beginning of the 20th century was always new, like a creative studio, full of color, ideas, and great minds. The works by Stravinsky and Ravel on this album "focus on a moment of great musical change," as Beatrice Lana describes it, and all of these works, written during the transition from Romanticism to Modernism, have an element of novelty and innovation. Of these works, "La Valse," composed between 1919 and 1920, is the most important piece on the album. "Ravel was critical of pre-World War I society," says Rana, "and he saw it as a 'charming waltz full of rich, seductive harmonies-Romanticism' that all but destroys the good world at the end of the piece. The whole good world falls apart," says Lana. Before World War I, Ravel did what Stravinsky tried to do.In performing Stravinsky, Lana draws much inspiration from the original orchestral work and then explores the piano's possibilities to the limit. As for "The Mirror," Lana believes that "Ravel poetically depicted natural landscapes, but what we have to be careful about is that these are all reflections in a mirror." Most of this repertoire was performed at her Carnegie Hall debut in March 2019. At that time, she received rave reviews in various newspapers, including one that described her as "astonishing technique distinguished by musical intelligence." Warner Music Japan
