Each composer, with his own unique compositional approach, was both a witness to and an explorer of the ever-evolving choral works of the time. They serve as a source of beauty and emotion, embodying the liturgical ideal of a spiritual and faithful devotion to the Virgin Mary. The composer Campra, born in Aix-en-Provence, wrote, “I have also attempted to blend the delicacy of French music with the vitality of Italian music as much as possible.” This goal can be seen as the guiding principle of his music, whether religious or secular. Campra’s Requiem was likely composed in the last decade of the 17th century; its mystical power is magnificent, and it is considered one of the most beautiful and successful fusions of French and Italian styles.
