In January 1997, a concert was held to celebrate Bowie's 50th birthday, which was attended by many guests.Released shortly thereafter in February, "Earthling" was recorded from August to October 1996, just after the "Outside Tour," with Reeves Gabrels and Mark Prati as co-producers. The album was then completed with overdubs of performances by Mike Garson, Gail Ann Dorsey, and Zach Alford, who were also on the tour.
