Renaud Capucon(Vn)Daniel Harding / Swiss Romande Orchestra Sibelius (1865-1957)

Description:

A new challenge to the concerto of Sibelius and Barber violins, in which the work's bare qualities come alive because of the beautiful sound of Renaud Capuçon's violin. This new album by Renaud Capuçon, following the successful release of Cinema 2 (over 21,000 copies sold worldwide), is a return to the core repertoire: Barber's Violin Concerto with Sibelius. The concerto is performed with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under the direction of Daniel Harding. Much of the violin writing in Sibelius' concerto is purely technical, but even the most flamboyant passages alternate with melodic passages. The concerto is symphonic in scale throughout, and is a complete departure from the lilting, "rhythmic" accompaniment found in many of his other concertos. Capuçon's velvety color and expression of the violin strings is played with the richness of song that is paramount in performance, thanks to his vast musical experience and versatile abilities. However, in a modern interpretation, the tension of the sound is maintained by the use of vibrato, with or without vibrato, the intensity of the sound, and a slow, calm tempo. 'It was through a recording by Isaac Stern that I became acquainted with this Samuel Barber concerto. It is particularly moving because the violin that Stern used for the performance is now mine. I heard it again played by Gil Shaham. The first two movements of this concerto are very light and melodic and create a lot of imagery. The last movement is very technical." said Renaud Capuçon.
