Using harpsichord and historical virginals, Jean Rondeau depicts the "gloom" and "color" of 16th- and 17th-century European composers in this album "Melancholy Grace," a poetic collection of 16th- and 17th-century keyboard music by Italian, Dutch, English, and German composers. Jean Rondeau, the prodigious chamber musician, considered this album to be gloomy, but it is an eloquent dialogue between two contrasting voices ... "melancholy conveyed through a sense of color" and "melancholy conveyed through the musical expression of tears and wailing voices. Among the composers as "sense of color" are Frescobaldi, Luigi Rossi, Luzzasco, and Sweelinck, while for "tears" a selection of works by Dowland, Bull, Gibbons, Valente, and Scheidemann. The album also uses two instruments to convey to the listener the impressions of the pieces. For the "colorful" pieces, a large Italian-style harpsichord, based on an early 18th-century model and built in 2007 by French maker and restorer Philippe Humeau.The piece representing "Tears" uses the original polygonal shaped virginal (probably the first ever virginal), probably made by Francesco Poggi and his surrounding makers around 1575. Their sound designs are distinctly different, each with a specific action and a specific shape, and as a result, the sounds they produce define very different acoustic registers.
