Schuricht’s Ninth 1954 Montreux Live In addition to the famous recordings from the EMI Complete Works series, there are other recordings of Schuricht conducting the Ninth, such as the 1961 Stuttgart performance released on CD by the Hensler label; however, this live performance from Montreux is particularly popular among Schuricht fans as a masterpiece in a class of its own. Here, Schuricht alternates between charging forward with almost frenzied intensity and singing out the themes of joy with deep, leisurely expression; he shifts the tempo with an almost improvisational freedom, unconcerned with minor irregularities, and keeps the music constantly in motion. The way the orchestra and chorus desperately strive to keep up with Schuricht’s free-spirited conducting is truly thrilling! It’s the very essence of a live performance. The sound quality is also quite good for a live recording from that era.
