Aaron Goldberg, who rose to prominence in the groups of Mark Turner and Joshua Redman, is now one of the busiest pianists in the world. In the 2000s, he visited Japan with the renowned OAM Trio, featuring Omer Avital and Mark Miralta. In recent years, he has visited Japan three times with Sadao Watanabe's group, and it is still fresh in our memories how he amazed his core fans, who are focused on the present, with his independent session live performances as a backing member. That's Aaron Goldberg. This work can be said to be the masterpiece of his brilliant career. The title is simply "The Now".There are few words that capture the essence of jazz—a music that embodies the fleeting moment of now—as succinctly as this. Yet, in these studio recordings, the performances here are truly filled with the excitement of a once-in-a-lifetime encounter! Beyond the brilliant and impeccably precise phrasing, the melodies overflow with beauty wherever you listen, and I feel they have been honed to perfection in recent years. Furthermore, the sound is rich in color and nuance...! Overall, it boils down to one word: sensibility. The sheer pleasure of hearing each moment transformed so vividly into music is something you're unlikely to find elsewhere! While packaged as a CD, it also brims with the excitement of a live performance. The varied song selection is also appealing. From ballads to 16-beat contemporary tunes, it centers on his own highly original compositions, yet the opening track is none other than Chico Buarque. This album features three Brazilian songs, including a piece by Toninho Horta.At first glance, these may seem unexpected, yet they reveal a fresh charm in the "sensibility that captures the saudade of Brazilian music through beautiful arrangements and harmonies, paired with solo work that is both fresh and refined"! Moreover, while they might catchy renditions of Haitian traditional songs, they flawlessly execute Charlie Parker's bop numbers and Warne Marsh compositions bursting with Tristano-esque phrasing, executing them brilliantly and flawlessly, truly mastering every aspect! Yet, Aaron's signature touch lies in incorporating pop songs, both old and new, presenting them within a unified worldview that truly showcases the artist's sensibility. Amidst battle-hardened sessions, this work connects tradition with the ultimate moment, ideally crystallizing the artist's philosophy. Combining the latest 2014 recordings with three tracks from 2009, this is a 21st-century masterpiece of piano trio music! Kurt Rosenwinkel joins for the finale, making this nostalgic closing track truly memorable!
