October 15, 2026, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Karl Richter, the master of Bach interpretation. His legendary performances carried on Germany’s great tradition and left an indelible mark on 20th-century music history. This collection is brimming with historical significance and musical treasures. Karl Richter (1926–1981) remains one of the most important performers in the history of postwar Bach interpretation. This edition brings together his entire recorded legacy from Telefunken-Decca (Teldec) and Ducretet-Thomson, which are now part of the Warner Classics catalog. Reflecting his activities as a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, this collection documents him as a musician with a wide-ranging repertoire that extends beyond Bach, providing an overview of his achievements and his place in the musical world of the 20th century. Some of the recordings—including those appearing on CD for the first time as official releases—have been remastered from the original master tapes for this release. Karl Richter was born in 1926 in Plauen, Germany. He studied under Karl Straube and Günter Ramin at the Kreuzschule in Dresden and the Leipzig Conservatory, carrying on the great German tradition of Bach performance. After being appointed organist at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1949, he moved to Munich in 1951. While teaching at the local university of music, he founded the “Munich Bach Choir” (1953) and the “Munich Bach Orchestra” (1954), which would later gain international renown under his direction. In 1956, he declined an offer to become cantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, choosing instead to pursue his career in Munich. Demonstrating equal talent as an organist, harpsichordist, and conductor, he undertook energetic concert tours throughout Europe, North America, and Japan, frequently performing alongside the top singers and instrumentalists of his generation. His vast discography, primarily preserved by Telefunken-Decca (Teldec) and Archiv, includes major sacred works, keyboard pieces, concertos, and chamber music by J.S. Bach, as well as recordings of organ works by Schütz, Handel, Monteverdi, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Bruckner, and German Romantic organ works. In later years, despite facing challenges posed by the rise of early music performance (performance based on historical information), Richter remained faithful to his own artistic vision while maintaining a respectful dialogue with its pioneers. Based in Munich until his death in 1981, Richter remained one of the 20th century’s leading interpreters of Bach, and his recordings represent the pinnacle of the “great German performance tradition” that preceded the rise of early music performance. *Lyric translations are not included.
