Jozef Špáček on violin and Tomáš Jamník on cello, two leading contemporary Czech virtuosos, record works by four Czech composers of the 20th century! The title "Paths" is a play on the word "paths," which means "small paths" or "walkways," and the album is themed around the multifaceted perspectives of crossroads in life: the paths we choose and the paths that are both destined and inevitable. Janacek's fascination with pan-Slavic ideas led him to Russia, where he composed a string quartet (in this recording, arranged by Izzy Kabat for violin and cello) inspired by Tolstoy's novel. Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) dedicated his duet to Janacek, whom he admired as a friend and composer. Although Schulhoff left behind some 200 works during his lifetime, he was branded as "degenerate music" by Nazi Germany and died in a concentration camp in 1942.Composer prodigy Gideon Klein (1919-1945) was another who had a tragic life. His "Duet for Violin and Cello," of which two unfinished movements remain, is included here. Born in 1986, Špáček's career has been spectacular, and in September 2011, at the age of just 24, he was appointed concertmaster of the prestigious Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, he has been passionately devoted to solo and chamber music, and his performances in Japan have attracted attention for their high quality. Tomasz Jamník, cello, was born in 1985 and won the highest prize in the cello section at the 58th Prague Spring International Music Competition held in 2006.
