Tomáš Netopil, Prague Symphony Orchestra

Description:

Five orchestral works by the prolific composer Martinů are recorded by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra led by Netopil! SUPRAPHON label has been releasing new recordings of Czech composer Bohuslav Martineau. This album features five orchestral works composed between 1953 and 1958. Although his symphonies and other major works from his American period are well known, Martineau continued to write energetically after 1953, when he moved to Europe. The Frescoes of Piero della Francesca" is a three-movement work composed in 1955, inspired by a mural based on Piero della Francesca's "The Crucifixion" in the central chapel of St. Francis Basilica during a visit to Italy in 1954. The frescoes have a peculiarly austere serenity, full of serene and moving poetry." It has an atmosphere of dark colors that I want to express in music," said Martineau before his death. The work is written for four winds, accompanied by a harp. The "Fables" also reflects Martineau's philosophical ideas, with each of the three movements being an allegory of life and the human quest. The symphonic prelude "The Rock" juxtaposes the landing place of the English settlers who came to North America in 1619 with Martineau's own fate as a pilgrim. The final piece, "Prints," is a beautiful work that gives the impression of a miniature painting woven into the silence, rather than inspired by anything like his previous orchestral works. These wonderful Martineau works have yet to receive the recognition they deserve, and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Netopil, carefully renders a tribute to their country's greatest composer Tomáš Netopil, who was born in 1975 in Kromerszych in the eastern Czech Republic. He has appeared at the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Staatskapelle in Dresden, and since the 2013/14 season he has been the General Music Director of the Essen Opera House. He has appeared with orchestras and theaters throughout Europe, including the Dresden State Opera, Paris State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, and London Philharmonic Orchestra. In Japan, she will perform with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in November 2019.The SUPRAPHON label has released Martineau's series of pieces to folk poetry for mixed voice, children's chorus and solo voice, and small orchestra, and the cantata "Bouquet" (SU-4220).
