The Arcadia String Quartet, ardent proponents of Weinberg's quartets, says, "Weinberg's music is like a gleam of light surrounded by the darkness of the unknown, and it became our goal to diminish its shadow." said Weinberg, whose previous work, "String Quartets Vol. 1" (CHAN20158), was named "Record of the Week" by BBC Radio 3 Record Review and nominated for the ICMA (International Classical Music Awards) 2022 in the chamber music category. The second collection also features three pieces from different periods of composition: No. 1, written in 1937 when he was a teenager, was substantially revised and republished in his later years. No. 7 was written after his emigration from Poland to Russia and his experience of imprisonment in 1953.No. 11 coincides just as Weinberg is composing his first opera, premiered by the Borodin String Quartet, which is dedicated to his eldest daughter. The Arcadia String Quartet was founded in 2006 by students of the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Romania, and has won the 2009 Hamburg International Chamber Music Competition, the 2011 Almere International Chamber Music Competition, the 2012 Wigmore Hall London International String Quartet Competition, and the Winner of the 2014 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, the quartet is one of the most exciting string quartets of its generation.
