Gipps, Ruth (1921-1999)

Description:

The second collection of orchestral works by British female composer Ruth Gipps! The second collection of orchestral works by Ruth Gipps (1921-1999), including the little-known "Symphony No. 3"! Juliana Koch, principal oboe player of the London Symphony Orchestra, also participates! This is the second orchestral works by Ruth Gipps (1921-1999), a British female composer who studied under Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob. Following the first release (CHAN20078), which included "Symphony No. 2" and "Symphony No. 4," this release, conducted by Ramon Gamba, includes three works written during World War II and the rarely heard "Symphony No. 3. The varied "Oboe Concerto" (soloist Juliana Koch, principal of the London Symphony Orchestra!) ), "Chanticleer," an overture to an unfinished opera, "Death on a Pale Horse," a symphonic poem based on a painting by William Blake, and "Symphony No. 3," written for a large orchestra that requires numerous percussion instruments, including glockenspiel, celesta, and tom-tom, with a fugue in the last movement. All of the works in the "Symphony No. 3," which also features a fugue in the final movement, show her great skill with orchestral music. Born in the English seaside resort of Bexhill-on-Sea, Ruth Gipps entered the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 16 and rapidly developed as a composer and pianist. In addition to studying with Gordon Jacob and Rafe Vaughan Williams, she also studied oboe with Leon Goossens and was an oboist with the Birmingham City Orchestra. Her contributions to the British music world are many and varied, and her recordings have increased in recent years. Tokyo M-Plus
