Nämé Järvi, the don of the Järvi family, the Estonian musical family, is now available in a set of Halvorsen's orchestral works Vol. 1 to Vol. 4, which have defined Chandos' Nordic repertoire! Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) was a Norwegian composer of national renown as a violinist and conductor who was promoted from concertmaster to principal conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and in 1899 was appointed conductor of the National Theater of Kristiania. He is the heir to the Norwegian National Music School established by Grieg and Svendsen, and at the same time, his varied style, including brilliant orchestrations reminiscent of French Romantic music, is his specialty and appeal.This set is full of Halvorsen's charms, from the three symphonies he left behind to works with a strong nationalist influence, such as "Fossegrim," which uses the Norwegian folk instrument Hardanger fiddle (Hardingfærre). Another key point is the fine performance by Marianne Tuschen, Norway's leading violinist, who is the soloist in numerous works for violin and orchestra, a specialty of Halvorsen herself.
