Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), one of the greatest British composers of the 20th century, celebrates his 100th anniversary in 2013. Chandos presents the anniversary album "Violin Concerto" and "Piano Concerto" with an all-British cast including Tasmin Little, Howard Shelley, Edward Gardner, and the BBC Philharmonic! Composed in 1938 on the eve of World War II, the "Piano Concerto" was later revised in 1945 when the third movement was replaced by an "Improvisation" from "Recitative and Aria. The first movement, with its fast-moving, gorgeous toccata, is very impressive, and the last movement, with its shadow of war creeping in, is a masterpiece of British piano concerto music. The master pianist Howard Shelley takes up the challenge of performing the highest peak of the piano concerto in England.Tasmin Little, a specialist in British music, will be the soloist in the Violin Concerto. Composed in 1939, the year the Spanish Civil War ended and World War II began, it is an excellent work that shows Britten, who was in his mid-20s at the time, at the height of his talent. The orchestra is conducted by Edward Gardner, who gave excellent performances in two orchestral collections (CHAN 10658 & CHAN 10671).
