Singing John Shepherd's masterpiece "Mass in the West Wind," the Choir of St. John's College Cambridge, one of the world's leading choirs with a long history and tradition of over 300 years, having served in worship since the late 17th century and 1670s. Under the direction of Music Director Andrew Nesinga, the choir sings religious choral works by John Shepherd (c.1515-1558), an English Renaissance musician of the same generation as Thomas Tallis and Christopher Tye. This was the era of the English Reformation, which saw a dizzying change from the state church to Catholicism and then to the state church. Like Tallis, Tye, and Bird, Shepherd lived through this turbulent period and was one of the most important musicians of his time, serving as choir master at Maudlin College and musician in the royal chapel.The parody mass "Mass of the West Wind," which uses the English popular song "West Wind" as its fixed melody, is a masterpiece of the English Renaissance period, along with the works of the same name by Taverner and Tai.
