Description:

Julia Block, soprano acclaimed by Simon Rattle and others, releases her uniquely programmed debut album on the Nonesuch label! Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1987, Julia Block participated in the Opera Theatre of St. Louis' Artist in Training program while still in high school. She went on to receive her Bachelor's degree from the Eastman School of Music, her Master's degree from the Graduate School of Voice at Bard College, and an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School of Music in New York City. Today, her versatile artistry, combined with her keen insight and unparalleled theatricality, has led her to headline performances and concerts for prominent arts organizations around the world. As an innovative curator, she has been invited by various arts organizations, museums, and schools, and has been co-partner with Esa-Pekka Salonen at the San Francisco Symphony, and artist-in-residence at the Guildhall School of Music in London, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She has been invited as artist-in-residence at the Guildhall School of Music in London, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. New York magazine has praised her as "one of the few classical singers who can truly radiate an aura. Many famous conductors, including Simon Rattle, have already fallen in love with her wonderful voice, and she has been used to great acclaim in concert and in opera, including baroque music.Brock's selections for this album include Negro spirituals, Barber's "Knoxville, Summer of 1915," arias from John Adams' opera "El Niño," and works by 1950s jazz and singer-songwriters. Brick's voice is a deep and rich place, with qualities of both Marian Anderson's expressive contralto and Leontyne Price's shocking climaxes. Each word is voiced and pronounced with her exacting vocal inflection and precise expression, expressed even by the slightest movement of the mouth, with an enveloping tone, a surprisingly mature presence, and an unusually sophisticated insight into culture, society, and history. Of the album's diverse repertoire, Block said, 'This music and poetry have contributed to my development as a classical singer. Over the years, I have revisited, revised, and revised these materials. For this reason, I definitely call these songs "classical". Classical music embraces traditions across cultures and celebrates diversity of thought, expression, and experience,'" he said.
