Born in Philadelphia in 1917 to exiled Russian parents, Shumsky began violin lessons at age three and made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age seven. He made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of seven, and was praised by Stokowski as "the greatest child prodigy of all time. After graduation, he worked as a soloist and in ensembles such as the NBC Symphony Orchestra and the Primrose String Quartet, which Toscanini led. As a pedagogue, he taught at the Juilliard School of Music and Yale University, and retired from the forefront of performance activities. In the early 1980s, he returned to the forefront of the music scene with performances and recordings. This 3-CD album is a collection of recordings from the early 40s through the 80s of Shumsky's performing career.
