Leonard Schurr (1910-1995), American pianist and Schnabel's younger brother, made his debut in Germany after graduating from the University of Music in Berlin in 1927, and was the sole assistant to the great Schnabel until 1933. He then returned to the United States and made his New York debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under conductor Koussevitzky. He performed with major American orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra led by George Sell, the New York Philharmonic, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, to great acclaim. He gave a concert of Beethoven's complete works at the Library of Congress, which was released on the DOREMI label as the complete Beethoven cycle (DHR-8011).He has frequently collaborated with such renowned conductors as Steinberg, Mitropoulos, and Bernstein, and in 1979 he made a successful concert tour of the Soviet Union. A gifted teacher, he taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Texas, and in his later years, he mentored younger conductors at the New England Conservatory of Music. His repertoire includes Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. The repertoire includes Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schumann, and German works, and on this album, like his teacher Schnabel, the music is full of life and richly interpreted, and the listener can listen to it carefully.
