The Romantic Piano Concerto Series (RPCS) is Hyperion's popular series that discovers and revives unknown piano concertos of the Romantic era. Volume 84 is a collection of piano concertos by Alois Schmidt (1788-1866), who was active in the 19th century. He was an outstanding pedagogue and his teaching methods and exercises were well known and highly acclaimed, even by Franz Liszt at the time. Born in Germany, Alois Schmidt first learned music from his father, an organist. In 1810, he made his debut as a pianist in Frankfurt, and from this time on he also developed a reputation as a piano teacher.As a composer, he composed four operas, two oratorios, symphonies, string quartets, four piano concertos, songs and cantatas, and more than 100 compositions in a wide range of genres, but he is little known today. The two piano concertos and the Rondo Brilliant are the first recordings of their kind in the world. These piano concertos sound like Beethoven and Mozart, and the ingenuity of Alois Schmidt, who was an excellent pedagogue, is evident in many places. Tokyo M-Plus
