New Takács String Quartet recordings by the newly formed Takács String Quartet with Grammy-winning violist Richard O'Neill! Formed in 1975 by Gabor Takács-Nagy, a student at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and others, the quartet gained international attention when it won first prize and the Critics' Prize at the Evian International String Quartet Competition in 1977, In June 2020, world-renowned violist Richard O'Neill, a Grammy Award winner (+3 nominations), will join the quartet as a new member. The new recording from the new lineup is a sister-brother program combining the string quartets of Fanny Mendelssohn and Felix Mendelssohn. The passionate and tragic F minor quartet (No. 6), considered to be a "requiem" for the sister who died about two months before the composition, is contrasted beautifully with Fanny's only string quartet, written in 1834 based on an unfinished piano sonata (and one of the first string quartets written by a woman in existence).
