Founded in 2011 by Mark Dourish, a former member of Lee Fagiolini and the Cambridge Taverner Choir, De Profundis is a male voice choir specializing in Renaissance music that has garnered attention for its originality, The third release on Hyperion is a collection of masses, Magnificat & Motet by Juan Esquivel (c.1560-1630), a Spanish composer of the late Renaissance period who served as music director of the Ciudad Rodrigo Cathedral. This is a restoration of the music of Esquivel, who is known as one of the most prolific and outstanding composers of his time in Spain, but is rarely neglected in our time. Another characteristic of de Profundiz is that it does not have a fixed musical director, but invites a specialist conductor for each project. The first recording (CDA 68257) featured musicologist and choral conductor David Skinner, co-founder of Cardinals Music, while the second (CDA 68141) brought in Robert Hollingworth, founder of I Fagiolini, to great acclaim.The third edition is conducted by Eamon Dugan, associate conductor of The Sixteen and an accomplished conductor who has demonstrated his skills in a series of recordings of Polish Baroque music that are unknown to the Coro label.
