Boasting a wide repertoire ranging from Bach and Handel to Kenneth Layton, Esenwals, and Ukaszewski, among others, and especially renowned for its performances of modern and contemporary British music such as Howells and Stanford, Layton & Trinity College Choir was awarded the 2014 British Composer Award (now the Ivars Composer's Prize) for religious choral works by Cecilia MacDowall (b.1951), one of the most celebrated contemporary British composers of all time. The album celebrates McDowall's 70th birthday, and is a collection of religious works from the past decade or so by McDowall, who has worked on a wide range of music but is especially popular for her choral music that creates a mysterious and original sound.In the past, leading British choirs such as The Sixteen, Marian Consort, St. John's College Cambridge, Queen's College Oxford, Oxford Merton College, and Winchester College Chapel Choir have frequently recorded McDowall's works, but there have been few recordings of her choral works alone. Although she has been frequently recorded by leading British choral groups such as St. John's College Cambridge, Queen's College Oxford, Oxford Mart College, and Winchester College Chapel Choir, there have been few albums that exclusively feature McDowall's choral works, and this recording will be an opportunity to promote her talent to the world.
