Alice Couto, the famous British mezzo-soprano! 21 Schubert Lieder accompanied by Julius Drake! A program of Schubert songs sung by the famous British mezzo-soprano Alice Couto. Couto is considered one of the finest mezzo-sopranos in contemporary Britain and was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2018. Her recital and opera appearances and recordings are extensive, and her beautiful and sensitive Schubert is first class, as she premiered the mezzo-soprano version of Schubert's "Winterreise" at the Mariinsky Festival in St. Petersburg. This album includes a wide range of works from 1815, when Schubert created many masterpieces, to his posthumous works. Many of the songs are based on Goethe's poems, and it is said that Goethe's poems were very musical, often written to be sung rather than spoken, and Schubert left many of them behind. Accompaniment is provided by Julius Drake, a master accompanist who has consistently accompanied one of the Hyperion label's major projects, the complete Liszt Lieder. Tokyo M-Plus
