Following his previous works Ives and Barber, Amlan's long-awaited new release is a collection of late piano works by Isaac Albéniz, one of the most important composers in the history of Spanish music, who was active in 19th century Spain! Albeniz's early works were mainly technical and fast passages influenced by Liszt, but his later works have a strong ethnic flavor, including the inclusion of Spanish folk music. Albeniz himself was a pianist with a penchant for extreme virtuosity, and perhaps this is why many of his piano works require a high level of virtuosity. The "Iberia," published in four volumes between 1906 and 1909, is an extremely difficult piece composed using extremely complex piano techniques and Albéniz's free and bold use of harmony.It is also interesting to note that the unfinished "Navarre" B.49 is usually performed in the version completed by Deodat de Selavik after bar 245, but here we have William Bolcom's version. Amran, who has demonstrated his virtuoso abilities on numerous occasions with Liszt, Godowsky, Shostakovich, Ives, and Kapustin, is now taking on the challenge of Albéniz. Amran, who is also a virtuoso virtuoso, performs Spanish music with piano works created by Albéniz, who excelled at super-technique. This is a very powerful title that demands your attention! Incidentally, Amran is scheduled to perform in September 2005, and the program on September 11 will include the "Complete Iberian Works.
