Isaac Stern's beloved son, Michael Stern, conducts a collection of orchestral works by Vaughan Williams and Elgar, now available on SACD. The incidental music "The Sparrowbee" was adapted from the play by Aristophanes into a suite consisting of an overture and four pieces. It is also known as the "Aristophanes Suite. It is one of Vaughan Williams' early masterpieces, and the humorous music is played one after another, starting with the overture, which beautifully expresses the wings of the bees that give the play its title. The "Greensleeves" fantasy is a stand-alone interlude from Act IV of the opera "Sir John in Love. Greensleeves" is a folk song from the late 16th century about a flirtatious woman in a green-sleeved kimono, and this fantasy was composed in 1908.Also, Elgar's Enigma Variations is an undisputed masterpiece, and the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, led by Stern, will present music carefully assembled with great attention to detail.
