A Ukrainian pianist living in the United States expresses her passion for her homeland in this album titled "Music and Art for Ukraine". The first piece, "Invasion," is the latest work by the composer, Louis Spratlan, who has been a friend of Shpachenko's for the past seven years. It is, of course, about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and is filled with the despair and anger of Spachenko, who watched in horror as his hometown of Halykiu was destroyed from American soil. In addition to piano, saxophone, horn, trombone, percussion, and mandolin are added to represent the cruelty of war. The other pieces are pre-war, and "Wanderer," although written 17 years earlier, is seen as foreseeing and embodying the trauma of war. The album features not only sound, but Shpachenko commissioned artwork from Ukrainian artists, many in full color. It also includes shocking artwork from the recent tragedy, painted by 10- to 12-year-olds from a painting studio in Halykiu.Proceeds from the discs will be donated to Ukrainian humanitarian aid organizations.
