Description:
Hindemith, Prokofiev, and Bartok at Kansas City's New HallOpened in September 2011 at the southern end of downtown Kansas City on a small hill adjacent to the Crossroads Art District, considered one of the city's most artistic districts, with its many art galleries. The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, which opened in September 2011, is a large cultural complex with two halls: an 1800-seat theater with a proscenium-style stage and a 1600-seat concert hall for classical music. The classical concert hall (Herzberg Hall) has been acoustically treated with great care, allowing the rich sound of an orchestra to be fully appreciated. The Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, led by Michael Stern, makes this new hall its home. The recording includes Hindemith's Symphonic Transfiguration on a theme by Weber.Along with the symphony "Matisse the Painter," this is the most frequently performed of Hindemith's works, composed in the U.S. in 1943, with its impressive interplay of concertina and dissonance based on Hindemith's original theory of harmony. Then there is Prokofiev's suite "Love for Three Oranges. This work is a suite version of the composer's own arrangement of six excerpts from an opera performed in Chicago in 1921. The opera is based on a fairy tale written by Italian playwright Carlo Gozzi. The story is about a prince cursed by a witch who goes to the desert in search of three oranges and marries a princess who appears from one of the oranges. Finally, Bartok's "The Wonderful Chinese Officials" Suite.Because the entire ballet music includes a chorus entitled "Pantomime in one act," which has a wild and dissonant sound that dominates the entire piece, the suite version, which is shorter to about 20 minutes, is performed relatively often. The performance concludes with a performance of great richness and powerful dynamism. King International
