A House of Call-My Imaginary Notebook, a contemporary response to the imaginary voices of Heiner Goebbels, is a series of four parts. The Ensemble Modern responds to the voices Goebbels stored in his "imaginary notebook. These voices, which Goebbels encountered in projects, travels, personal meetings, and in ancient manuscripts (some of them quite by accident), are reproduced here in their original sound and language as dialogues, petitions, prayers, entreaties, commands, stories, or songs. The orchestra members individually and collectively respond to these voices in a "responsorium" that critiques, interrupts, supports, and denies. 2 CD set. The title is taken from a passage in the Irish novel Finnegans Wake by James Joyce, "A prolonged visit to a house of call," and the American composer John Cage wrote a radio play based on this novel, "Roaratorio. Goebbels has said that he was deeply impressed by this radio play as well. Heiner Goebbels was born in 1952.He is a composer and director based in Frankfurt. Ensemble Modern is a German chamber ensemble at the forefront of contemporary music. Universal Music/IMS
