An inspirational recital by German violinist Carolyn Widmann, an "encyclopedia" of 1,000 years of musical history on the violin. The program spans 1,000 years of musical history, from the medieval German composer Hildegard von Bingen's Antiphona "The Holy Spirit is the Fire of Life" to the contemporary British composer George Benjamin's "Three Pieces". Along the way, Vidman's "Little Encyclopedia" includes works by Eugène Ysaÿe and Jorge Enescu, who bring new expressive possibilities to violin works. And a sparkling performance of Bach's "Partita No. 2" rounds out the program. The recording was made at Auditorio Stelio Moro RSI in Lugano. Produced by Manfred Eicher. Universal Music/IMS
