On the 70th anniversary of her death, an orchestra of blacks and minorities recorded the legacy of America's first black female composer 《Chineke! Orchestra/Geneva Kanay-Mason - Works of Florence Price》The 70th anniversary of the death of Florence Price, the first black female American composer, will be celebrated this year (2023). To commemorate the occasion, Europe's first orchestra of blacks and minorities, the Chineke! Orchestra will release an album of recordings of this composer's legacy, including the two award-winning works that brought her international success as a composer. Symphony No. 1 in E minor expresses the rich diversity of African-American music and is reminiscent of Antonín Dvořák's "New World" Symphony. The 1933 premiere of this work made Price the first African American woman to compose a symphony to be performed by a prestigious national orchestra. The Chicago Daily News called the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's premiere "a perfect work. The album also includes a piece called "Piano Concerto in One Movement," which was premiered in 1934.Almost a century later, a young pianist from England, Jeneba Kanay-Mason, born in 2003, is carrying on Price's music through recordings for the modern listener. His Resignation and Faith, from "The Shadow of Ethiopia in America," is a rarely recorded orchestral work that vividly depicts Africans coming to America and trying to fit in. Lost until 2009.
