Riccardo Chailly's long-awaited recording of Mendelssohn's "Italia" Symphony (revised 1834), a collection of works on Italy by three Austro-German composers, was made in the glorious auditorium of La Scala. It is coupled with two Rossini-inspired "Italianate" overtures by Schubert and three operatic overtures by Mozart that were premiered in Milan. Riccardo Chailly has been music director of La Scala since 2015, having previously worked with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, It has carved an outstanding history under legendary conductors such as Bernstein, Giulini, Muti, Sinopoli, and Barenboim, and is currently led by Riccardo Chailly, who will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year (2022).
