Composer's Thoughts on Music that Confronts Racism and Becomes a Place to TalkAmerican composer Carlos Simon releases "Requiem for the Enslaved," a work that belongs to a variety of genres. The piece is music dedicated to the memory of the stories of 272 men, women, and children sold into slavery by Georgetown University in 1838." Written as a "rap opera," Carlos has infused the melodies of African-American Negro spirituals and familiar Catholic worship melodies into this work. Carlos is joined by Marco Pave on spoken word and MK Zulu on trumpet in an ensemble performance with Carlos on piano and Hub New Music. Carlos has been an invited composer at the Kennedy Center and was awarded the Sphinx Medal of Excellence by the Sphinx Organization in 2021. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University and was named "Composer to Watch in 2022" by The Washington Post.The murder of George Floyd occurred in Minnesota in 2020 and sparked widespread protests around the world. In dedication to Mr. Floyd, Carlos has been commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra to write a major work entitled "brea(d)th". Universal Music/IMS
