Description:
The golden age of American classical recording comes to life in this collection of monaural recordings by 20th century masters. 31-CD box set "Mercury Masters" series, following Raphael Kubelik and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, now for the first time, a collection of thrilling orchestral performances and stunning audio technology, Antal Dorati and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in monaural. This is the first time that the monaural recordings of Antal Dorati and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, a masterpiece of orchestral performance and superb audio technology, have been released together. This newly remastered set recreates the golden age of American classical recordings, most of which are available on CD for the first time. 31-CD box set. Limited edition. Original jacket. Hungarian conductor Antal Dorati became music director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1949, and quickly built it into a world-class orchestra. Mercury continued to record with the orchestra from 1952 until Dorati's resignation in 1960, producing 51 albums (24 in mono and 27 in stereo). There is a legacy of what he built with the orchestra during his 11 years as music director. Newly remastered from original sources by chief engineer Robert Fine, who worked with Mercury for many years, and Thomas Fine, son of producer Wilma Cozart. The program opens with Stravinsky's intense "Firebird" and ends with two Hungarian works from the same period, the incomparably talented Kodaly's "Peacock" Variations and Bartok's sensational "The Wonderful Chinese Official." Also of note are three Tchaikovsky ballets by acclaimed ballet conductor Dorati. The legendary grand overture "1812" is included in its original version with a "making of" narration by Deems Taylor. Taylor also narrates Britten's "Introduction to Orchestral Music for Youth" and Tchaikovsky's ballet Suite from The Nutcracker, as well as three unusual musical stories narrated by Jerry Terheyden. The last two albums are with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. There is no other recording like it...and there never will be. And there never will be... it has to sound like the real thing... is it possible to surpass it in the art of reproduced sound?" - "The New Records" (1959) (on Tchaikovsky's grand overture "1812") Universal Music/IMS
