This album release commemorates two anniversaries: the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi's birth and the 30th anniversary of the founding of I Fagiolini. Monteverdi was an important figure who experienced the downfall of Renaissance music and the rise of Baroque music. Toward the end of his life (1640), Monteverdi published the second volume of his Vespro (a collection of church music), which was not included in his most famous early work, the Evening Prayer of the Virgin Mary (1610). This volume includes works not included in his own works. In this album, I Fagiolini sings excerpts from this second volume, which is full of fine, little-known pieces that are rarely heard today. Robert Hollingworth, a scholar and conductor of the period, has assembled a liturgical setting of Monteverdi's wonderful poems, interspersing antiphons between them. His meticulously researched performance succeeds in recreating a large space music that is transparent and breathtaking. Universal Music/IMS
