The ideal performance of French works by a German conductorThe newly remastered Eduard van Beinum album coupling three masterpieces by Franck and Ravel is a proud addition to the Eloquence series. Van Beinum is a German conductor especially known for his performances of Austro-German composers from Mozart to Mahler, but he is also a master of the wide range of orchestral timbres, making him an ideal performer of French works. He was an excellent successor to Willem Mengelberg, who was music director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1945 until his untimely death 14 years later. The symphonic poem "Psyche" was originally released with Bruckner's Seventh Symphony, but here it is coupled with Franck's popular concerto for piano, "Symphonic Variations," recorded solo by Geza Anda in 1943 and released on Deutsche Grammophon. The Spanish Rhapsody was one of the first postwar recordings made for Decca at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and remains one of van Beinum's outstanding recordings.Twelve years after the recording of the Spanish Rhapsody, Ravel recorded the orchestral works Bolero and La Valse, which were first released on 10" LP by PHILIPS.
