Two Contrasting Requiem MasterpiecesAlthough they are both dedicated to the souls of the dead, Verdi's Requiem and Fauré's Requiem are completely opposite aspects of the same piece. Verdi's huge work, known for its intense "Day of Wrath," and Fauré's work, represented by "Pie Jesu," is filled with serene and pure sounds. Each of these two sets features performances that get their most deserving exponents; this is the first international release of Kempen's Verdi, which was created in 1955. And although Fournet is an authority on the work, this 1953 recording is rarer than later performances, with Morane, Duruflé, and other valuable faces. Universal Music/IMS
