A Violin Sonata Album with Deep Meaning in the Selection Yuko Shiokawa and András Schiff deliver an insightful - and enjoyable - program of sonatas for violin and piano in this album. Sonata No. 3 in E major, followed by Beethoven's Sonata No. 10 in G major at the end, with Busoni's Sonata No. 2 in E minor sandwiched in the middle. No 20th-century composer was more closely associated with Bach's music than Busoni, and his Sonata No. 2, published in 1901, benefits from both Bach and Beethoven. Its form is related to Beethoven's later sonatas, and the final movement uses Bach's chorale "Wie wohl ist mir" as a variation theme. As in Shiokawa and Schiff's earlier, highly acclaimed duo recording for ECM (Schubert's Fantasie), the two perform with flawless technique and deep understanding. The Bach-Busoni-Beethoven program was recorded in December 2015 at Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano, produced by Manfred Eicher. Universal Music/IMS
