The result is a pleasant work with a contemporary breeze, while remaining grounded in the jazz vocal tradition.Aubrey Johnson, whose uncle is the late Lyle Mays, a keyboardist who played with Pat Metheny Group and others (M9 "Close To Home" is his song), teaches voice at Berklee College of Music in Boston and Jazz Master Program at the City University of New York at Queens. Influenced by Joni Mitchell, Bjork, Dianne Reeves, the Dirty Projectors, and Brazilian music, he has performed with Lyle Mays, Jimmy Cobb, Bobby McFarlin, and Fred Hersch. He got his breakthrough with his first solo album, "Unraveled," released in 2020, which included pop elements. Randy Ingram is a pianist who came to prominence when he played the role of Bill Evans in the film "Waltz in Stockholm" (based on the life of singer and actress Monica Zetarlund), a film that attracted a great deal of attention in Japan. As a boy, he played with Nate Wood, who later became the drummer of Kneebody, and others, and studied with Fred Hirsch and Danilo Perez at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.He has performed with many greats such as John Ellis, Mike Moreno, and Drew Gress, and has released several leader albums on Sunnyside, including Sky/Lift (2014), The Wandering (2017), and The Means of Response (2019). He is now one of the label's indispensable pianists. The jazz world has no shortage of great duo teams of vocalists and pianists, including Tony Bennett & Bill Evans, Norma Winston & John Taylor, and Gene Lee & Lan Blake, but Aubrey Johnson & Randy Ingram are sure to be right up there with them.
