Zoltán Kocsis, one of Hungary's leading pianists and more recently also a conductor, has recorded a new album of Brahms and Liszt with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he has been the General Music Director since 1997. In Brahms' "Piano Concerto No. 1," Sándor Falvai, a leading figure in Hungarian music who was active at about the same age as Kocsis, plays the piano in a crisp Brahms with a beautifully chilly tone and no hint of sweetness. The piano tone is open with a firm touch. Kocsis also makes music meticulously with the hand-armored orchestra.A truly honest performance of Brahms!
