The "Poulenc Trio" is a unique ensemble consisting of oboe, bassoon, and piano. Originally organized in 2003 as an American ensemble to perform Poulenc's triple concertos, the Poulenc Trio now arranges and performs a wide variety of works for this unique ensemble, and has received high acclaim. This album, their debut for the DELOS label, opens with Schnittke's "Suite in Classical Style," which is reminiscent of a classical work. Originally adapted from the soundtrack of the Soviet-era film "The Adventures of the Dentist," the piece is characterized by its imitation of music from the Baroque period. Originally intended to be played on violin and piano, here it is treated as a series of suites accompanied by poetry readings, to great effect. After the steady sound of Beethoven's "Songs of the City" and the passionate and lively rhythms of Spanish composer Vazquez, the trilogy ends with Schnittke's suite without "poetry" played once more, leaving a mysterious aftertaste.
