Description:
Switner's nimble and clear conducting and the splendid singers bring this old-time classic back to life in the best sound quality ever! The orchestra is also superbly beautiful. Newly reissued from the original ETERNA analog tape. World's first SACD release! Mastered only in analog domain and directly converted to DSD! Excellent recording. The world's first SACD release of the 14th SACD hybridization of the latest reissue project of the original ETERNA analog tapes in Japan, a masterpiece recorded at the end of Switner's tenure as music director of the then Dresden State Opera (1960-64). Although sung in German, this masterpiece has been one of the most important recordings of this music of the era since its release. The recording is a timeless masterpiece, featuring a splendid lineup of singers, including the stars of the West at the time, the beautiful sound of the Staatskapelle Dresden, and Switner's crisp conducting. This recording was made with the Staatskapelle Dresden just prior to his appointment as music director of the Staatsoper Berlin in 1964, but until then, ETERNA had recorded the most important operas from this period, including "Escape from the Palace" and "Salome" (some of these recordings were made with the Staatskapelle Berlin (Although some of the recordings were made with the Berlin State Opera, some of the recordings such as "Hansel and Gretel" continued to be made with other labels). The "Magic Flute" recorded in 1970 on the original Eulodisc disc will also be released as a SACD hybrid disc in this reissue project (Nippon Columbia TWSA1089 on July 21). The Berlin Classics reissue of "The Magic Flute" will be the first opera release in the Berlin Classics reissue project. Switner's recordings from this period, especially the Mozart symphonies with the Staatskapelle Dresden that followed, are all excellent, with flowing phrasing and appropriate articulation that makes the most of the light tempo and tone of the orchestra. The singers, W. Berry, A. Rothenberger, H. Pry, H. Gyuden, E. Mathis, and P. Schreier, are all well rounded and stable, and the album, including the excellent recording by C. Streuben, has a sense of unity that is astonishing. The German singing is not a problem in the presence of such perfection, and the more you listen to the album, the more you will be drawn into it. The music progresses without any breakdowns, and the overall cheerful musical style with light music may have also had an influence. The slightly austere sound of the orchestra, which blends with the singers, is also superb. The high sound quality of this release has made it possible to understand the details even more. You can even feel the atmosphere of the time. (1/2)
