Description:
The prodigious Manze and the NDR Philharmonic Orchestra attack Mozart's Symphonies Nos. 40 and 41 in this SACD hybrid disc. Manze, originally known as an acclaimed baroque violinist, has also been active as a conductor, serving as the principal conductor of the North German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Hanover since 2014. The disc features Mozart's Symphonies Nos. 40 & 41, recorded alongside the Mendelssohn symphonies. As a baroque violin virtuoso, Manze is especially sensitive to the strings and exquisite tempo setting, and he delivers a crisp and aggressive "Manze-isms" in this performance. Mozart's masterpiece No. 40 Symphony in G minor uses the minor second degree, which is said to be "the most agonizing pitch," as the basic motive throughout the entire work, and the chromatic melody and harmony derived from this motive are important. Manze's performance of this unforgettable masterpiece is tense and expressive at the same time. On the other hand, No. 41 in C major, "Jupiter," was composed in the same year as No. 40. The final movement reaches a spectacular and high conclusion with the great sound construction that all have been praising. Manze's performance is truly colorful. King International
