The production was directed by Kriegenburg, a genius in the German theater world who surprises people with his innovative methods. ≪Simon Boccanegra" is the 20th opera Verdi wrote at the age of 43, featuring Simon Boccanegra, who actually lived in Genoa in the 14th century, and is a human drama with complicated political backgrounds and human relationships. Moreover, the opera is known as a challenging work because it requires five talented singers: three male bass singers, a tenor, and a soprano, and it has not been performed at the Salzburg Festival since 1961, when Tito Gobbi, one of the leading Italian baritones of the 20th century, sang the title role. This time, the important Simon Boccanegra will be sung by popular Italian baritone Luca Salsi. This is a difficult role that requires three different personalities: the pirate's boldness, the statesman's magnanimity, and the father's love for his daughter. Luca Salsi plays this multifaceted role with great acting and singing.The production uses a modern backdrop in which the characters wear suits, have cell phones, and use social networking services, while the father-daughter reunion scene skillfully depicts the universal love between father and daughter. The Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka's singing as the daughter Amelia is also a must-see. Conductor Gergiev has placed the low strings in the center of the work, as if to showcase the bass appeal of the three baritone and bass singers throughout the entire work, creating an impressive bass sound. Gergiev had a very busy schedule this summer, performing "Tannhäuser" at Bayreuth, "Simon Boccanegra" in Salzburg, the Verbier Festival, and the PMF. However, on the day of the Bayreuth concert, he was informed that his mother was in critical condition and had to cancel the first day of the concert (Thielemann substituted for him).
