Kurt Weill's symphonies recorded by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra led by HK Gruber! Austrian composer HK Gruber (1943-) is so fascinated by Kurt Weill's world that he is an honorary life director of the Kurt Weill Foundation. In his new album with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, which he conducted on his own recordings such as "Manhattan Broadcast" (BIS-1341) and "Busking" (BIS-1781), he performs three Weill works as conductor and singer. The "Symphony in One Movement" (Symphony No. 1 "Berlin Symphony") was composed in 1921, when Weill was 21 years old and studying for his master's degree at Ferruccio Busoni, and was first performed by the NDR Symphony Orchestra on February 12, 1958, after Weill's death, in a radio broadcast in Hamburg. Johannes R. Becher's epic drama "Arbeiter Bauern Soldaten. Der Aufbruch eines Volkes zu Gott (The Laborer Peasant Soldier. Der Aufbruch eines Volkes zu Gott (The People's Awakening to God)" is said to have inspired this play. This performance is based on the revised edition by James Holmes. The first movement of "Symphonie Fantastique" (Symphony No. 2) was written by March 1933, when Hitler seized power and Weill fled Berlin for Paris, and the entire work was completed in Louveciennes in February of the following year.The second movement of "Largo" was premiered on October 11, 1934 by the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bruno Walter. The "Silver Lake" was premiered on October 11, 1934. The "Silver Lake" is a lively "Overture" and sixteen numbers that combine classical symmetry with jazz-like rhythms and melodies. Subtitled "Ein Wintermarchen" (A Winter's Tale), the story "wanders between the reality of a society suffering from food shortages and the possibility of a miracle to free people from social unrest," with lyrics such as "Der Zar lasst sich photographieren (The Emperor of Russia Makes Me Take a Picture). Weill completed the opera before leaving Germany. It was completed before Weill left Germany and premiered simultaneously in Leipzig, Erfurt, and Magdeburg on February 18, 1933. In this excerpt, two songs, "The Baker Bakes Bread at Dawn" and "How Much for a Little Advice? are sung by Gruber, inspired by recordings of Ernst Busch and Mrs. Weill's Lotte Rainha in the Magdeburg premiere.
