He also wrote symphonies, symphonic poems, string quartets, and piano sonatas, but he is essentially a master of the smaller forms. The music has a bright but restrained Scandinavian lyricism. The collection includes the highly demanding Violin Sonata No. 2, a fantasy for unaccompanied violin, and a character piece in which the imagination soars with lightness.
