This is the sixth in a series of string works evoking the gentle and scenic English countryside. The works of Holst, Purcell, and Warlock are staples of English music, but there are also works by Kurth, who depicts the city of Winchester, and William Lloyd Webber, father of the brothers Andrew (composer of musicals such as "Cats") and Julian (cellist), and others that are nostalgic even after one hearing them. The album is a concentrated collection of such melodies. Naxos' sixth volume of English string pieces ranges from Lloyd-Webber, famous for the work of Purcell, Holst, and his two sons, to Adam Kurth, renowned for his many works for young string students, to Malcolm Lipkin, who has written three symphonies.Paul Kerr's "Very English Music" is an ode to the English countryside and rural life, and Lipkin's "Through La Manche" suite is a celebration of Europe itself, where symbols of various musical cultures can be heard in place of each other.
