Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Duke Ellington... Mary Lou Williams (1910-81) was a pianist, composer, and arranger who earned the admiration of jazz greats. She constantly innovated new jazz sounds, from swing in the 30s, modern jazz in the 40s, bebop in the 50s, and funk in the 60s, and in 1964 she released this album. Dedicated to the mixed-race saint "St. Martinot de Porres," this concept album was based on blues and jazz, with elements of Catholic chant and Negro spirituals added, opening up a completely new genre called "Religious Jazz. The album, which also features Grant Green on guitar and Percy Heath on bass, is full of soulful and divine music.
